Nineteen

“Hank is going to wear a hole in the floor with the way he’s pacing outside this room. Are you sure you wouldn’t like some company?” Jake was busy typing away on a small computer when he asked.

“I don’t even know why he’s here. I mean, I know he’s here because he felt some need to drive me here and make sure my shoulder was okay, but why? I’m nothing to him.”

“I think we both know that’s not true.” Jake moved closer to Daisy, and she raised her eyes to meet his.

“What do you mean?”

“We’ll circle back to that in a minute. But why don’t you go over with me how this happened? Hank mentioned being at the Broken Spoke, but didn’t give any other details.”

“Oh, um, there was just a guy who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Hank intervened, and made him leave, but I guess he stuck around outside because when I was walking to my car, he grabbed me.” Her voice stuck in her throat and her gaze lingered on the floor. Surely she didn’t have to go further than that. She didn’t know if she’d be able to keep it together if she did.

“That’s all that happened, the guy grabbed you?”

“Jake.”

“Daisy, I just want to understand. If there was more, if he hurt you more, I want to help you.” He gently touched her arms and looked over the bruises that were already forming.

“H-he tried to, I mean, he was trying t-to do more. B-but he didn’t have time to.” Tears dotted her lash line and then they flowed freely, completely disregarding how hard she was working to keep it all together.

“That must have been really scary. I’m so sorry that happened.”

“I don’t even know why I’m crying. Nothing happened. Hank was walking by and stepped in. I’m fine.”

“Daisy, you were physically assaulted tonight. You’ve been working to recover from the accident and then to have this happen. Of course you’re going to be emotional.” She quickly accepted the tissue he was handing to her. “Do you have someone you can talk to about this?”

“Not really, but it’s okay. I’m okay.”

“I know you are incredibly strong, but when things like this happen, it’s not only the physical things you have to get over. There’s a psychological component, too. I just want to make sure you are taking care of that part of yourself, too.”

“It’s not my first time dealing with something like this.” She watched the concern on Jake’s face turn to shock and then understanding.

“I didn’t see anything in your medical history.”

“I didn’t report it.”

“Have you told Hank?”

She was sure her face betrayed her own shock now.

“I’ve never told anyone.”

“Daisy, I think it would be good for you to let him in. He cares about you. He will want to help you through this.”

“As much as a sheriff cares about anyone who lives in the area he serves.”

“No, you’re wrong. If you don’t want to talk to him, I can get you some resources, names of therapists or support groups that can help.
